LOUDER THAN HELL INTERVIEW
IN THE MIDDLE OF JUNE ’96, SIMON MUSK FROM THE ARMY OF IMMORTALS WENT TO ORLANDO, FLORIDA, USA, TO INTERVIEW ERIC ADAMS AND ASKED HIM ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM ….
Simon Musk: YOUR VOICE ON THIS NEW ALBUM “ LOUDER THAN HELL “ IS EVEN MORE STUNNING THAN ON THE TRIUMPH OF STEEL, HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE THIS ?
Eric: I don’t know ( laughing ). I guess it’s just I sing what I feel. When I get into the character in the song I just sing in the way I think it’s got to go. Joey kind of directs me around, he says “ try this note, try that note “, but there are times when you feel the song has to go to a certain level and I always try to give balls to the wall at the end of the song, you know everything goes and I go nuts ! There have been things I have wanted to try on all the albums and I always forget to do them and I’ll be listening to a song and think “ fuck, I really wanted to do that and now the album is done !”. There was another thing on this album where on the main verses I could sing the regular voice and also do an octave below it and follow that mirror that along, but I forgot to do that, so maybe next time ! I did want to do that Queen vocal thing like in “ King “. I really wanted to do that, so that worked out pretty good.
Simon Musk: HOW DID YOU FEEL TO BE RECORDING WITH SCOTT ONCE AGAIN ?
Eric: Oh man, from the very first time Scott came back and we set up, we were telling Karl “ wait ‘till you hear this guy because he’s going to bring it all back together “ and it was. He came back in and we played “ Manowar “ and it was like, you know what it reminded me of the first time I met Scott when he came to audition for the band, he did this thing and from the first verse Joey and I looked at eachother and there was no question that this was the way to go and this time it was a reminder of that. It was such a good feeling to have him back, not only musically, it really felt like the band again, that was the really cool thing when we were recording this album , we were saying “ wait ‘till the fans hear this !”. It’s a good feeling, a great vibe, the band is back together and we are ready to rock !!!
Simon Musk: I SAID TO JOEY THAT THIS NEW ALBUM HAS A REALLY MATURE FEEL AND GROOVE TO IT, IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE A REALLY COMPLETE ALBUM, WOULD YOU AGREE ?
Eric: Yeah, I told him that too, I said there isn’t one song that I get tired of hearing. I was joking with him and I said “ you know, your bass-solos, I skip right thru them on the previous albums ( laughing ) “. This album I can listen to the whole thing over and over again, I really like it a lot. The instruments on the album are just “ wow”, they set you back, put you in another world. Karl has a really good mood playing those and he takes you where you want to be and then things come right back in with POWER right away ! It wakes you up, it’s really cool !
Simon Musk: WHEN YOU ARE RECORDING A SONG, IS IT ALWAYS IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND HOW THAT PARTICULAR SONG WOULD SOUND LIVE ?
Eric: Not until I listen to the playbacks of it, then I start to think about that, what it will sound like live. I’m just too busy working on the song, it’s almost like a hypnotic trance for me when I’m in the studio. I always take some time, I need maybe 10 or 15 minutes before I start to sing. I stand in the room, thinking about what the words are, who the character is, because I am that character, I am the “ Outlaw “. I really get into that. Like “ The Gods Made Heavy Metal “, I felt like I was Moses for christ sake ! I really get into that, I was dictating to the world from the bible of metal ! We wanted to speak the first verse with some sound effects , thunder and lightening and the wind ( claps with his hands together – BOOM ) and then go into the song. In the end we decided, no let’s just go straight into the song, but I think it works really well as it is now.
Simon Musk: THIS IS SORT OF A 50% NEW BAND, WILL IT TAKE LONG FOR THE BAND TO GET TOGETHER FOR PLAYING LIVE AGAIN ?
Eric: No, not at all, Karl is a very intelligent musician, he knows his theory, he has added so much to the band and we have no problem with that at all. When Scott came back, it was like “ yes, this is what it’s supposed to be “. I said to him “ you have been on vacation long enough, you prick, it’s time to go back to work ( laughs loud )”. Scott is just a funny guy and it’s great to be out on the road again with him. When we started to play in the rehearsel hall, it felt like the magic was back, and I know all of us are so anxious to play live that it won’t take long at all to get things in shape. It’s just a good, good feeling and I haven’t had that feeling since Scott left. It feels like the four original members again, it feels great !!!
Simon Musk: WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEND A MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR FANS WORLDWIDE ?
Eric: Well, laughing, tell all the woman to come up to my hotel after the show, no really all the crazy fans out there, get ready because we are back and ready to kick some serious ass with this album and the World Tour. The band has never sounded better and we are playing louder and heavier than ever. See you all soon and remember play it LOUDER THAN HELL !!!!
