Since Karl Logan joined MANOWAR, there are a lot of letters coming in with questions about him. Everybody who already saw him play in South America and the USA is telling the same story : this guitarist is just awesome ! The fans in Europe can see the guitarist very, very soon. During the promotiontour in Germany a few weeks ago, we had the chance to meet him and of course we took this opportunity to do this interview with Karl …..

Interviewer: YOU ARE IN THE BAND FOR A WHILE NOW AND INVOLVED IN A LOT OF THINGS ALREADY, LIKE THE MAKING OF LOUDER THAN HELL AND THE CONCERTS IN SOUTH – AMERICA AND THE USA. IS YOUR LIFE CHANGED SINCE YOU JOINED MANOWAR ?

Karl: O yes, completely. This has been a life long dream to be where I’m at. There is a lot more fulfilling now then there ever has been. But at the same time, it’s different then what you think it will be when you’re young. When you’re young you think it’s a lot more like “ Hollywood “, more glamorous. But what it really is, are periods of inactivity and boredom, mixed up with periods of extreme busy, crazy activity.

Interviewer: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM THIS UPCOMING EUROPEAN TOUR ?

Karl: Well, to meet a lot of nice girls ! And besides that, the most important thing for me in life is playing well. I just want to go out and meet the expectations of the fans and of myself, because I’m very hard on myself, so I want to go out and play every night like it’s my last night.

Interviewer: DO YOU HAVE THE FEELING THAT YOU HAVE TO PROVE YOURSELF TO THE FANS ?

Karl: I think so, yes. I think that’s natural. At the same time though, I don’t need to prove myself to myself, I’m really not a very competitive person. You know, if somebody comes up to me and says : “ David Shanle was much better “ or “ Yngwie Malmsteen is much better “, that doesn’t really bother me, because everybody has the right of their own opinion. If I think I’m playing well and if every night I get on that stage, and I think I played the best I can, that makes me happy and I’m satisfied. I’m not out to compete with everybody and say : I’m better than all the others. Because there are so many good guitarplayers, you have to give anyone their credit.

Interviewer: DID YOU PLAY IN OTHER BANDS ?

Karl: Yes, just local bands, nothing with a real record deal. I travelled around the East Coast in the USA, every state from Texas to Kentucky, all the way over. We played originals and covered Heavy Metal songs.

Interviewer: DO YOU HAVE A MUSICAL EDUCATION ?

Karl: O yes, a lot. I have studied jazz, classical guitar, all that kind of stuff. I wouldn’t say that I can play anything, but I do know a lot of different styles and I also incorporate a lot of different styles into my playing, a little bit of blues, a little bit of classical and I think this album shows that. Like the solo on “ King “ is very bluesy, but the solo in “ Outlaw “ is very classical.

Interviewer: FOR HOW LONG DO YOU PLAY THE GUITAR ?

Karl: For 16 years now.

Interviewer: DO YOU ALSO PLAY OTHER INSTRUMENTS ?

Karl: No, I only play a little bit of keyboards, I play enough to get by. But I never really studied other things, because I always thought that the best you could do is to play one instrument extremely well, in stead of five of them just a bit.

Interviewer: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYER ?

Karl: Yngwie Malmsteen and Randy Rhoads. But there are a lot of people I listen to. There are a lot of players who influenced me and shaped me.

Interviewer: WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE MUSIC ?

Karl: Personally, I listen to filmsoundtracks. For example, I think that the soundtrack from the movie “ The Last of the Mohicans “ was brilliant. I also like the work of Ennio Morricone, he did the soundtracks to all the Leone spagetti-westerns. I love to play Heavy Metal, but when I’m off the road and I need to clear my head, I listen to that kind of music.

Interviewer: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE KIND OF MOVIES ?

Karl: Westerns and well – made war movies.

Interviewer: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MANOWAR SONG ?

Karl: That is hard to say, I have to choose between Blood of my Enemies and Master of the Wind. And from the Louder Than Hell album, I would say Courage.

Interviewer: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MANOWAR FANS ?

Karl: I think they’re crazy … I really do .. The fans are great. I’ve met fans in Spain during the promotion tour, and they were so fanatical. And the fans in South America after waiting so long to see us, was like “ Beatles mania “ Every airport we showed up at, was disturbed because so many fans were out there to see us. It’s great that the fans believe in the band so much. It makes me feel good to know that in Europe the fans are exactly what the band wants the fans everywhere to be.

Interviewer: DO YOU WANT TO SAY SOMETHING TO THE DEFENDERS OF STEEL ?

Karl: I just want to say to everybody to cme out and see the show. It’s gonna be the biggest show so far and the best one. And I think this is the year for MANOWAR ! There is no other band anymore who stays true to themselves, the way we have !
